How to read

by Darren on Jun.03, 2010, under internet

I was looking through an old folder yesterday and came across this graphic from the New York Times of a few years ago which looked at the literacy debate of are you really reading when  you are online.  (original article: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/27/books/27reading.html?_r=1&scp=7&sq=read&st=nyt)

How we read when online

This graphic was really interesting to me as it communicated a process from information absorption to information dissemination. Interestingly the graphic specifically mentions blogs as a way of communicating information learned.

Steve Jobs spoke at the All Things Digital Conference

What does the iPad mean for the publishing industry, Kara asks. Is it the savior that some are touting it as?

“I don’t want us to see us descend into a nation of bloggers,” says Jobs. “I think we need editorial oversight now more than ever. Anything we can do to help newspapers find new ways of expression that will help them get paid, I am all for.”

I think that as the next generation of journalists emerge they will form themselves into loose networks with senior people who advise and mentor the upcoming group so that they have the “editorial” oversight that jobs mentions, but without the “big business” overtones. Hyper-local news….(maybe I’ll save that for next time)
